If you don't know how to do a new install of XP, then you probably shouldn't put a beta release of Vista on the machine. -- Tom Porterfield

i know how 2 install xp using a cd, but of course new computers these days dnt come with the operating system cd.

Tom,
You computer most likely came with a partition on the harddrive for recovery. There is probably an application somewhere on your drive to create a backup or restore disk(s). Make sure you do that before trying out Vista. Also, make sure that you back up ALL your documents, favourites, emails...etc. etc....You will lose them on a clean Vista install.
But I agree with Tom P. You probably shouldn't try Vista. Even though its called Public, its not really for the public in that sense of the word. You should be pretty comfortable in at least recovering your system with all files intact before you attempt Vista.

Gee, do NOT install Vista Beta over your XP system. Install it ONLY if:

1 -- You're very familiar with and possess imaging software like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image so that you can back up and then restore your XP installation to it's present condition when you're finished with the Betas. Even if you find Beta 2 to be to your liking, MS never releases gold versions that can be installed over betas -- i.e., you will need to either go back to XP at some point or ditch everything and clean install Vista next year when it's released.
OR
2 -- You have a separate unused partition on your computer on which you can install it in dual-boot configuration.
OR
3 -- You have a separate computer for beta testing.
MS does not want you to install a Beta on top of your main operating system. They clearly state this in their disclaimers. This Beta is not that stable. I don't think Beta 2 (build 5384.4) is as stable or functional as was 5384. I've crashed it numerous times already. If you try to use it IN PLACE OF your present OS, you will very likely be disappointed.

How does one reinstall Windows Vista Beta 2 when you have no access to the CD Rom? I need to format and reinstall?

You might be able to do a network install, though I have'nt tried that myself. If that is an option, you will have to have a windows that you can use to access the networked DVD disk and run setup. "Shep72-Seeking to Understand Win. Vista" wrote in message

I just installed the Windows Vista Beta and am enjoying it so far, aside from the problems i had trying to get on the internet (took me two days to fix!). well then, I had two outlook express identities on xp that used the road runner servers (time warner). When i open windows mail, which obviously replaced OE, I am not prompted for identities, which I now know no longer exist. I assumed that my identities were somehow merged, which i though was ok, i guess. I clicked the send/recieve button, and low and behold, the login box pops up, which it never did in OE. I entered my username and password for my main account, AND IT DOESNT WORK! the damn box keeps popping up a up and then fails. I cant get my mail now for some reason as it cannot access the server (error message: Account: 'pop-server.neo.rr.com', Server: 'pop-server.neo.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Authentication failed', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92). This occurs even though all the settings and profiles are correct. This is a very serious issue for me, and I need help immediatly, thanks in advance.

Try removing the Mail account, and then close WinMail and then open it again and add the account back again. See if that fixes the problem.
Do not install a beta on a production machine and depend on things to work properly all the time and not to fail. Keep backups.
The messages can be imported from the older identities by going to File | Import | Messages. To find the locations of the message store for the older identities, see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4
